Lake Tekapo & Mackenzie, New Zealand

The Mackenzie Basin spreads tussock gold between the Southern Alps and two impossibly turquoise glacial lakes, Tekapo and Pukaki, with Aoraki/Mount Cook closing the horizon. It is also an International Dark Sky Reserve, which makes the night as much of a draw as the daylight.

Peppers Bluewater Resort

An alpine-style resort of rooms and self-contained apartments a short walk from the turquoise shore of Lake Tekapo, with a lake-view restaurant and dark-sky stargazing on the doorstep.

Lakestone Lodge

A six-room lodge on a tussock terrace above Lake Pukaki, where every bedroom faces Aoraki/Mount Cook and dinner is a set menu built around Mackenzie Country produce.

Mt Cook Lakeside Retreat

A private estate of villas on the shore of Lake Pukaki, each with its own outdoor hot tub, where breakfast and a garden-to-plate dinner are part of the stay.
